Why is This Month Different From All Other Months? Shabbat Thoughts on Pride

By Erica Hellman When I was in high school, my friend Skye came out as non-binary. Skye was especially brave, as they decided to come out, full stop. They told their family and friends, teachers and classmates. Skye had already been out as pansexual, and they were one of the first people I came out to myself. Their confident, easy-going attitude encouraged friendly questions about their identity and I admired them deeply for it. Skye and I were on the board for our synagogue’s youth group, and we met every week with our rabbi to plan events and other activities. When Skye came out, our rabbi postponed our usual discussions to inform us that she had been researching non-binary identities, and wanted to make Skye’s time at our synagogue as welcoming and comfortable as possible. By Ellie Goldstein My name is Ellie Goldstein and I am the 2018-2019 Sarah Lawrence Hillel President. I grew up in a Conservative synagogue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I developed some of my closest friends in this environment and in my time as a camper and counselor at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. I’m eager to recreate a similar Jewish community on the Sarah Lawrence campus. Sarah Lawrence Hillel is part of the Hillels of Westchester - an organization that encompasses Pace University, Manhattanville College, Purchase College, and Westchester Community College. We offer programming both on the Sarah Lawrence campus and on any of the other affiliated campuses. We hold at least two themed Shabbat dinners a month as well as holiday and Israel programming and social action activities. Additionally, I’m looking to create Friday night trips to New York City to explore different options for services.
